Most people think learning a foreign language, such as English, is difficult, so many of them end up giving up and failing. For those who want to be successful, the difficulty is a challenge. Many have taken various ways to become proficient in English. Especially in today’s digital era, many platforms are available to help English learners succeed. Apart from all that, the students must straighten out the perspective that learning English is fun, not complicated.

In this regard, the Faculty of Letters held an online public lecture to reinforce a “fun” perspective of learning English for new students of the English Literature Study Program. The activity ran on Saturday, September 11, 2021, with the theme “Fun Strategies for Successful Learning in the English Language”. This public lecture presented foreign guest lecturer Sean Timothy Stellfox, M.A. TESL. from Delaware, United States.

In his presentation, Stellfox presented exciting ways and resources to develop English skills, including americanenglish.state.gov, which contains webinar applications, MOOCs, songs, games, English clubs, and learning references. In addition, there is quizlet.com which includes applications to increase vocabulary through flashcards, writing, listening and spelling, tests, matching, and typing games. Other websites, such as bbc.co.uk/learningenglish/, englishcentral.comesl-lab.comelllo.org engvid.com, and learningenglish.voanews.com, are also excellent sources of reference.

Lectures will be more enjoyable with the various online learning platforms and how to run and play them. Stellfox also conveys multiple tips for making online learning fun: spending a lot of time on the things we enjoy, trying new things, doing hobbies that we like, finding a comfortable place, and changing the atmosphere. Thus, online learning will simultaneously provide a different and challenging experience. (Brev)
