Hundreds of students and lecturers from the Philippines, Indonesia, India, and Malaysia gathered online on Thursday, November 28, 2024, to attend Translinguistika: Series 1, an international event that promotes language and culture learning. With the theme “Hello World: A Journey of Global Greetings,” this event emphasized the importance of language as a bridge to global communication. Held via Zoom with a live broadcast on Facebook, this event was a success thanks to its interactive format and inspiring presenters.

This event was initiated by The Society of English Language Learners from the Department of Teacher Education, UMDC, Philippines, in collaboration with the Faculty of Cultural Sciences and Communication Universitas Muhammadiyah Purwokerto (UMP), University Sains Islam Malaysia (USIM), and Avichi College of Arts and Science (ACAS), India.

Eight speakers from four countries provided a unique introduction to their languages and cultures, including Javanese, Tamil, Malay, Arabic, Bisaya, and Filipino. Aurora Magenta Diva and Nadia Ramadhani, the speakers from the English Literature Study Program, Faculty of Cultural Sciences and Communication UMP, presented a topic about the Javanese Language. The speakers not only explained simple phrases but also introduced the cultural values contained in their language.

After the event, Aurora expressed her pride in being part of it. She said:

“The event was amazing! Though online, the organizers created a warm and interactive atmosphere. I feel proud to be able to represent Indonesia and introduce Javanese culture to an international audience.”

The event was also enlivened by entertaining art performances at each break. Moderators Lydelle Mae Dela Cruz and Ben Anthony Rollan managed to keep the flow of the event dynamic. At the same time, speakers such as Muhammad Aqil Bin Mud Rashid (USIM) and Bharani Khartikm (ACAS) received high appreciation from the participants for their great explanations.

The Dean, Dr. Widya NIrmalawati, S.S., M.A., expressed her impression of the event. She said, “I hope this program continues and remains sustainable if we persist in holding it, making it more collaborative with different colleagues and diverse themes. I want every colleague to gain the confidence to speak on stage, share their experiences about their languages and cultures, and improve their English. Most importantly, I believe it’s essential for colleagues to have opportunities like this because gaining experience is invaluable.”

Translinguistik: Series 1 not only taught about new languages but also reinforced the important message that language is a tool for building bridges between cultures. Most participants were impressed and inspired to learn more languages and understand new perspectives.

A participant from Indonesia, Amanda Rizqi Wulandari, commented:

“This event reminded me that language is the key to understanding the world. I feel closer to another country’s culture in just two hours.”

Seeing the high enthusiasm, the Translinguistik committee indicated that this program would continue with the next edition, inviting more participants from different countries who will share their unique languages and cultures.
